Socrates & Plato

Hi! My name is Socrates, and I am a cockatiel. I have been at the Library since September 2001. I live in the Director's office and keep a keen eye on things.

With large windows looking out into the library, I have a birds-eye view (pardon the pun) of everything that takes place! I love to ride around on Sara's shoulder, but I do have some responsibilities.

Guarding the copy machine -- from my side of the glass, of course -- is one of my main duties. I do have quite a repertoire of songs that I can sing, but only when I want to sing them. I don't sing on demand, just when the mood strikes me.

I have a new friend I'd like to introduce. His name is Plato, and he came to live at the library in April of 2004.

We'd like to tell you a little about cockatiels. We actually belong to the family of parrots. Europeans first encountered us in Australia in 1770 and introduced us to England in the early 19th century. A cockatiel is a medium-sized bird, weighing 80-100 grams and measuring 11 1/2 - 13 1/2 inches from the beak to the tip of the tail -- almost half of my length is taken up by my tail feathers!
